Confidence is beautiful

Wednesday, October 31, 2012
So many of you may find that the title of today's post a little different from what I usually write, but today's post will be about being confident about yourself. I'm writing this to hopefully inspire all of you to be confident about being true to yourself and finding your own identity.

(random insert of a self shot)

In our society these days, having the ability to be confident in yourself and knowing the true talent you possess is hard - because we are generally run by the influences of the media; whether it is with regards to their perception of "beauty" or their generalisation of being a genius which is narrowed down to just being book smart (showing good results in school and the likes), I notice that we are constantly being fed these subliminal messages of which is "right" or "wrong", "pretty" or "ugly", or "smart" or "stupid".

And when people group you into the lesser of the 2 "categories", this is when your confidence starts to dip. You start getting negative about yourself and all the negativity and bad energy builds around you, which will make your confidence level even lower, leading it into a cycle. You will start to ponder whether or not you really are as people tell you that you are and sometimes you fall into the black hole and start to believe that you are. (On a side note - please never tell anyone that they're ugly, because the emotional wound is really quite traumatising to the person on the receiving end, especially if she's a girl.)

Think about it. If you're not book-smart, does it mean that you're not talented otherwise, and are indeed stupid? If someone else thinks you're wrong or that what you're doing is "socially-unacceptable", does it necessarily mean that you are? If you're "ugly", does that mean you will not be "pretty" in someone else's eyes?

You don't have to fit into a mould that everyone else is trying to push you into, and fit themselves into.
Just imagine yourself being a square block, what are the chances of you passing through the triangular hole?? But somewhere else, there is a square hole waiting for you. As I quote from Albert Einstein: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

I myself am a pretty good example: I don't have any certifications show (I didn't complete my O's so my highest certification would be my PSLE certificate) but it doesn't mean I'm dumb, or that I will never make it into society. I was never a self-confident person but I found myself, and my confidence (although I'm still a little insecure at times), in blogging and doing what I am doing now.

My say would be to believe in yourself and let nobody tell you otherwise. Take everything with a pinch of salt and don't let anything unnecessary get to you.
(Of course, don't be stubborn or do something ridiculous like insisting that pushing someone off a 6 storey building is acceptable)

I hope this post gave you guys and girls some food for thought, and that they will keep all of you strong and tall to keep going, this mid-week. I think that people who are confident (note: confident, not over-confident) are really beautiful, not just inside, but as well as outside because they just seem to elude this certain charm and charisma.

And with this, I shall end off with a quote from one of my favourite movies - The Princess Diaries.
"Nobody can make you feel bad about yourself unless you allow them to."

Lots of love,
Jamie

  1. That's quite true. That's why the saying goes "a confident woman is a sexy woman"!
